The need of representation approach to provide prospective physics teacher
with better reasoning ability and conceptual understanding (Sutopo et.al.)

This article reports an explanatory QUAN-qual mixed method to assess students’ conceptual
understanding on mechanics and reasoning ability of the prospective physics teacher students (PPTS)
in a public university in Indonesia. Quantitative data, i.e. PPTS’s conceptual understanding on
mechanics, was gathered using Mechanics Baseline Test (MBT) developed from the work of Hestenes
and Wells (1992); whereas the qualitative data was gathered using rubrics to asses PPTS’s reasoning
ability that includes both technical and conceptual validity, based on students’ open explanation on
MBT. Subject of study consisted of 35 students who had taken Introductory Physics courses plus 24
students who had taken both Introductory Physics and Mechanics courses. This study shows: (1)
PPTS’s MBT score was quite low (mean = 7.41 (max = 22), SD = 3.95), (2) most PPTS’s reasoning
laid down on Level 1 (i.e. one level above the lowest level) for both technical (42%) and conceptual
validity (about 45%), and (3) there are strong correlations among scores of MBT, technical aspect of
reasoning, and conceptual validity aspect of reasoning. This study suggests the need of
representation approach to provide PPTS with better reasoning ability and conceptual understanding.

This paper examines the ways in which the physics teachers solve a multifaceted real-world problem that relates to the behavior of gas.  The  participants  consist of  30  physics teachers of  senior high schools in East Java. Most of  them have had 20 years or more experiences in teaching physics. They discussed the problem in a group of 3-4 teachers. This study shows that  no  teacher  succeeded  to  solve  the  problem.  In  solving  such  problem,  most  teachers  relied  on the  surface feature  of  the  problem  and  employed  a  common  sense  argumentation:  no  teacher  used  diagram  or  equations,  no teacher  referred  to  Newton  laws  of  motion or  state  equation PV  =  nRT.  Therefore,  it  is  critical  that  Physics  Education
Program should provide their prospective physics teacher the opportunities to acquire a deeper content knowledge and enough experiences in solving multifaceted real-world problems.

Pembelajaran dengan inkuiri dipadukan dengan keteladan yang konsisten dari para guru fisika
memungkinkan bertumbuhkembangnya karakter  siswa sebagaimana diharapkan dalam tujuan
pendidikan nasional.


Tujuan pelajaran Fisika di SMA  sebagaimana tertuang dalam standar isi sepenuhnya relefan
dengan misi pendidikan karakter. Oleh sebab itu, dalam merencanakan dan melaksanakan
pembelajaran fisika, hendaknya guru memperhatikan secara sungguh-sungguh tujuan tersebut.
Merujuk pada daftar kompetensi dan SKL saja tidaklah cukup.

Optical waves as solutions to the nonlinear Schrodinger’s equation (NLSE) which is a non-linear Partial Differential Equation (PDE) of third order have been of some interest in optical communication. The paper’s aim is to present an analytical exact solution to the NLSE equation by means of variable separation method that can be understood by undergraduate physics student. The visualization of the soliton as the exact solution of NLSE are presented in order to help the student to understand deeply the concept of soliton.

The results of thermal tests of high-temperature Bragg gratings written in a nitrogen-doped-silica-core fiber are presented. The gratings were produced by the conventional technique using an ArF excimer laser and a phase mask at various exposure regimes show that they can withstand heating up to 900oC. The possible physical mechanisms responsible for thermal decay of the gratings are analyzed. Based on these results, the grating written in this type of fibers is potential to be integrated in fiber sensor system, in order to develop a high temperature sensor.

Abstract

in a slanted Bragg grating, coupling between the fundamental guided mode and the counter propagating cladding modes result in discrete resonance in the transmission spectrum. These resonances are a drawback when slanted Bragg grating are used for gain flattening of fibers amplifiers. A new method based on a chemical etching of the cladding is proposed leading to an of the resonances and a reduction of the amplitude of the modulation. This method can be applied for any value of photo induced modulation amplitude in the slanted Bragg grating.

Bragg  gratings  have  been  written  in  a  non-hydrogenated  Corning  SMF28 telecommunication fiber using UV pulses at a high power density from an ArF laser. Some of these gratings were uniformly exposed with light at 193 nm. The isothermal accelerated aging method was used to characterize the thermal decays of both pristine and post-exposed grating spectral  characteristics. UV post-processing  led  to  an  increase  in  the  stability  of  the Bragg grating  reflectivity  meanwhile  the  shifts  in  the  Bragg  wavelengths  of  the  post-exposed gratings proved  to be higher  than  those of untreated gratings. It  is shown  that  the  isothermal decays  of  the  refractive  index modulation  cannot  be  used  to  predict  the  annealing  induced irreversible shifts  in the Bragg wavelengths. Our observations are discussed within the frame of the current theoretical descriptions of  the  links  that may exist between the writing and the thermal stability of Bragg gratings.

Abstrak Proses pra-sensitisasi serat optik germanosilikat hidrogenasi menggunakan prairadiasi uniform dari laser pulsa ArF 193 nm adalah efektif untuk meningkatkan fotosensitifitas serat optik secara permanen. Peningkatan fotosensitifitas dapat mencapai amplitudo modulasi indek bias berorde 10-3. Dari hasil analisis spektroskopi infra merah diketahui bahwa penyinaran serat optik germanosilikat, yang telah dipra-sensitisasi, menggunakan laser pulsa ArF 193 nm menginduksi terbentuknya spesies hidroksil.

The objective of this study is to increase the student’s achievement in Waveguide Topics by developing the simulation-approach teaching material . The simulation is developed by using Maple Program. The effectiveness of the teaching material is measured by using a questionnaire to students. More of 70 % students declare that the developed teaching material is easy to be understood. There is an increase in student’s achievement on waveguide topics, from 58,85 without the simulation approach to 70,2 with thi approach. It can be concluded that the developed teaching material is efective to improve the student’s comprehension and achievement on waveguide topics.

Abstrak
Fabrikasi Fiber Bragg Grating memerlukan sifat fotosensitif UV yang tinggi agar dapat menghasilkan profil modulasi  indeks bias yang memadai. Telah difabrikasi Bragg grating di dalam preform  serat optik germanisilikat  terdadah Flor dan Fosfor. Pengaruh dari Germanium, Flor dan Fosfor telah diteliti. Menggunakan analisa deskriptif spektrum transmisi  sinar  yang  terdifraksi  oleh  Bragg  grating  dapat  disimpulkan  pengaruh  dari ketiga  dopant. Germanium  dan  Flor meningkatkan  indek  bias melalui fotosensitibilitas UV  sedangkan  Fosfor  berperan  sebaliknya.  Hal  ini  sesuai  dengan  hasil  yang dipublikasikan  oleh  L.Dong  yang menunjukkan  penurunan  fotosensitifitas  dari  preform germanosilikat yang di-doping Fosfor.

Abstract
The concept of optical soliton was born in 1973 and was experimentally demonstrated in 1980. It took two decades for its application to practical systems. During this period, the research  on  optical  solitons  has  induced  the  development  of  various  new  theories  and stimulated  discoveries  of  new  forms  of  solitons.  Because  of  the  width  application  in currently  telecommunication  technology,  optical  soliton  is  one  of  the  essential  topics must be  introduced  in Modern Optics Course The objective of  this paper  is  to develop a learning  media  to  help  the  students  studying  soliton.  Instead  of  a  complicated mathematical aspects, the visualizations of the soliton are used in Modern Optics class in order to help the student to understand deeply the concept of soliton.

Abstract
Gain  flattening  of  optical  fibre  amplifier  is  important  for  obtaining  higher  bandwith  in wavelength
division  multiplexing  (WDM)  transmissions.  It  becomes  essential  in  long  haul  systems  involving  cascaded
optical  fibre amplifiers. Slanted Bragg gratings are very attractive candidates  for gain equalisation because  of
cost efficiency and low insertion losses. This feature enhances the coupling of the fundamental guided mode to
the  counter-propagated  cladding modes  leading  to  losses  within  a  spectral  range  of  generally  a  few  tens  of nanometres. These couplings  lead  to discrete cladding modes  in  the  transmission  spectrum. Unfortunately,  the discrete  cladding modes  in  the  transmission  spectrum  are unsuitable  for  gain  equalisation:  the SBG  creates  a strong  “modulation”  in  the  transmission  spectrum  due  to  the  interface  “cladding-surrounding medium”  that creates  a  resonant  cavity.  The modulation  can  be  reduced  using  a  careful  design  of  the  grating  profile. Two methods have been already proposed i.e. shortening the grating length or chirping the grating period. These two  methods  prove  to  be  efficient  but  require  high  photoinduced  refractive  index  for  filtering  of  a  few  dB.  Throughout this paper, we demonstrate the efficiency of a new method for reducing the “modulation” in Slanted  Bragg Grating spectrum. This new method  is  independent of  the photoinduced refractive  index. The main idea consists  in  inducing a  random  change  in  the  cladding  diameter  along  the  fibre  axis  in  the SBG  location. The random change is achieved by means of a chemical treatment of the cladding

Telah dilakukan fabrikasi lapisan tipis Copper Phthalocyanine (CuPc) dengan menggunakan elektroda emas (Au) dan elektroda perak (Ag). Dari hasil karakterisasi arus tegangan diketahui bahwa kontak yang terjadi pada persambungan elektroda antara CuPc dan Au bersifat Ohmic contact sedangkan kontak yang terjadi pada persambungan elektroda antara CuPc dan Ag bersifat Schottky contact. Hal ini berhubungan dengan tingkat-tingkat energi pada semikonduktor organik CuPc dan fungsi kerja elektroda yang digunakan, sehingga kita tidak bisa sembarang memakai elektroda untuk kebutuhan pembuatan divais elektronik.

Telah dilakukan fabrikasi lapisan tipis Copper Phthalocyanine (CuPc) dengan menggunakan elektroda emas (Au) yang dideposisikan di atas substrat kaca. Deposisi lapisan tipis CuPc dan elektroda emas dilakukan dengan teknik lithography dengan metode vakum evaporasi pada tekanan vakum (~ 6 x 10-4 Pa). Karakterisasi lapisan tipis CuPc dilakukan pada suhu kamar . Dari hasil karakterisasi lapisan tipis CuPc merespon adanya gas uji yang ditunjukkan dengan peningkatan konduktivitasnya. Lapisan tipis CuPc juga merespon variasi  konsentrasi gas yang diberikan. Waktu respon dan waktu pemulihan lapisan tipis CuPc masing – masing sebeasr 55 detik dan 60 detik dan untuk konsentrasi yang lebih tinggi diperlukan waktu yang lebih lama. Variasi ketebalan mempengaruhi respon sensor, lapisan yang lebih tebal akan mempunyai sensitivitas yang lebih besar tetapi waktu respon dan pemulihannnya akan lebih lama. Fungsi transfer dari respon CuPc terhadap perubahan konsentrasi gas uji berbentuk fungsi  polynomial, sehingga sensitivitas CuPc tidak konstan tetapi tergantung pada inputnya. Lapisan tipis CuPc memiliki stabilitas yang rendah dalam merespon gas uji, oleh karena itu perlu optimasi untuk meningkatkan stabilitas lapisan tipis CuPc agar dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai sensor gas yang memadai.
